June 18, 2019

It is with pleasure to make this very special announcement. We just received notification that our Har Shalom Library has received the Basic Accreditation from the Association of Jewish Libraries. This award will be presented at their annual conference in Los Angeles, California June 17 – 19, 2019.

Our Library Director, Judy Petersen, did an excellent job of presenting various attributes of our library. The criteria used to determine a library’s accreditation status include, but are not limited to, the following: bibliographic control and subject heading through an online catalog, collection development – holdings of books and audio-visual media, policies and procedures, programming, staffing and technology. The application process was lengthy and arduous, and Judy completed this process in a conscientious and professional manner. Let’s extend our congratulations to Judy Petersen for reaching this exemplary standard of excellence!

Changes are upon us and change is healthy but not always easy. As I mentioned in last week’s ED column, new staff will start work beginning this week and I’d like to ask for everyone’s patience as we onboard our new employees. We will see changes with communication, office hours and job responsibilities. Heather Regan will be moving from the front desk to a financial position. When you have general office questions, you can call the main number and ask our new Administrative Assistant, Gretchen Kastetter and she will be happy to assist you. I will make further announcements regarding additional staffing changes in the coming weeks.

Effective Monday, June 24, 2019, our office hours will be changing. Listed below is our new schedule.

A few other announcements:

  • 2019/2020 Membership Renewal packets will be mailed to your home this week and your reply is requested by June 30th. I urge you to strongly consider raising your membership dues. We need your support!
  • A group of ten Har Shalom moms will be going on the Momentum Israel trip December 10 – 17, 2019. The mission of Momentum is to empower women to change the world through Jewish values that transform ourselves, our families and our communities. Most of the expenses are covered but this group needs to raise a portion of the costs through fundraising efforts. We hope that you will support a couple of fundraising events to help these moms raise money for this trip.
    • We have booked The Summit in Windsor on Thursday, July 11 from 5-9 PM. There will be bowling lanes reserved starting at 6:30 PM. This will be a family friendly event that you won’t want to miss.
    • On Sunday, August 25, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, please join us for a summer concert with Rabbi Joe Black. Rabbi Black has published several poems and articles in leading national literary and academic journals. He is a frequent contributor to anthologies and collections of Jewish writing. Two of his songs, Boker Tov and The Afikoman Mambo have been made into Children’s books and distributed by the PJ Library. His book There Once Was A Man from Canaan: The Five Books of Limerick, is a collection of Limericks based on each torah portion. He has performed his original music in many communities in the United States and Canada and has received numerous honors for his performance and composition. We are fortunate that he will perform in our community. Stay tuned for event details.
  • Does anyone want to make a little spending money during the summer? Please contact me if you can help wash our tablecloths. I’d love to hear from you!
  • Anyone interested in picking up Challah every Friday? Your help with this mitzvah would be greatly appreciated.
