Ta’amei Ha-Miqra (Trop) Scriptural Chanting Class

Wednesday, April 25, 2018 • 10 Iyyar 5778

12:15 PM - 1:00 PMRabbi's Office

The Ta'amei Ha-Miqra Trope Class will begin with teaching the General Concept of how the musical notation system of the Hebrew Bible called Ta'amei Ha-Miqra or Trope works and how it is applied first to the reading of the Scroll of Esther. Then the major part of the class will be how Ta'amei Ha-Miqra is applied to the reading of the Haftarot in Synagogue. The goal will be to be able to decode and chant any Haftarah passage and know how to teach that same skill to others. The Haftarah is a reading from one of the prophets read in Synagogues on Shabbat and holidays after the Torah reading. Unlike the chanting of the Torah, which must be done from a scroll that has no trop or vowel markings, the Haftarah can be chanted from a printed Tanakh that has vowels and the trop notes so they do not need to be memorized.

This is not a course you can drop in on. One class builds on what was previously learned.
